“It’s long overdue we’ve corrected this injustice.” Minnesotans celebrate new law restoring voting rights to felons

A new state law in Minnesota has restored voting rights to citizens who have served time in jail or prison, allowing them to vote immediately after release without waiting until they complete probation or parole. The ‘Restore the Vote’ gathering, hosted by The Power of People Leadership Institute, celebrated the passage of the Felon Voting Rights Bill signed by Governor Tim Walz. The nonprofit has been doing outreach work at prisons for nearly two decades and hopes to help formerly incarcerated people navigate the voting process. Supporters say the new law gives ex-felons a stake in their communities and promotes their reintegration into society.
